Nに対する= toward; against; in response to (indicates the target or direction of an action or property; here, resistance to pressing force)

Nに結び付く= to bind to; to connect to (indicates joining or attaching firmly to a target; here, proteins binding to ice or cellulose)

Nと比べて= compared to N (used to contrast two things or show a relative difference; here, comparing performance against normal ice)

Vるかどうか= whether or not (expresses uncertainty about whether an action or condition is possible; here, whether the material can actually be used for buildings)

Language Insights

  • •The name "BioPykrete" is inspired by Pykrete, a composite of ice and wood pulp developed during World War II, but replaces pulp with plant-derived cellulose nanocrystals and bio-engineered proteins.
  • •In materials science, 圧縮強度 (compressive strength) measures how much squeezing or pushing load a material can withstand before crushing, contrasting with 引張強度 (tensile strength), which measures resistance to being pulled apart.
