When a forgotten melody echoed through a park in Buenos Aires, researchers were jubilant to hear history returning to the treetops. Scientists had recreated a lost arrangement chirped by local rufous-collared sparrows in the 1960s using hand-drawn musical annotations. After playing a computer-generated rendition in the area, they waited to see if wild birds would treat the artificial sound as realistic. Within three months, a local sparrow began copying parts of the tune, reviving a cultural tradition that had disappeared from the park.

treat the artificial sound as realistic= 把人造聲音當作真實的來對待(treat A as B 表示「將A視為/當作B」)

For songbirds, learning the correct melodies is vital for survival. Male birds need complex, well-performed songs in familiar local dialects to defend their territory and attract mates. When a bird species faces population declines, however, fledglings have fewer adult tutors to learn from. Without experienced singers nearby, young birds can develop abnormal calls or mistakenly imitate other species, jeopardizing their chances of successful breeding.

jeopardizing their chances of= 危及牠們……的機會(現在分詞片語作為結果狀語,表示前述狀況帶來的負面威脅)

The project was co-authored by Gabriel B. Mindlin, a physics professor at the University of Buenos Aires. Mindlin noted that while biodiversity conservation often focuses primarily on genes, learned cultural behaviors such as birdsong are equally critical to a population's health. The songs of rufous-collared sparrows combine a regional trill with a variable theme. While some historical themes have survived, others vanished as bird numbers in the park dropped.

equally critical to= 對……同樣至關重要(將習得的文化行為與前述的基因保育並重)

Although rufous-collared sparrows are not globally endangered, researchers hope synthetic tunes could help tutor critically endangered bird populations where authentic audio recordings no longer exist. Conservation experts caution that artificial sounds might not completely replace real-life role models, as young birds often require direct social interaction with living tutors to master wild songs. Nevertheless, computer reconstructions offer a promising way to preserve and restore vocal traditions before they disappear forever.
