Shedding new light on a century-old debate in Egyptology, re-examined human remains from early royal tombs indicate that court officials and craftspeople may have been sacrificed upon the death of their rulers. Analysis of skulls excavated from the First Dynasty royal cemetery of Umm el-Qa’ab near Abydos—dating back to around 3000 BC—revealed clear signs of lethal blunt-force trauma among retainers buried around royal funerary enclosures.

The study, published in Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology by Dr Roselyn Campbell of Purdue University, evaluated 46 skulls held in the Duckworth Collections at the University of Cambridge. These remains belonged to retainers buried in subsidiary graves surrounding the tombs of King Djer, King Djet, and Queen Merneith. Campbell identified potentially fatal injuries, including fractures and a chopping wound to an eye socket, on 18 of the crania. Rather than maces, which were iconic royal weapons of the era, the blunt trauma appears consistent with blows dealt by flat, wide implements made of wood or antler.

consistent with= 與……一致、符合rather than= 而非、而不是

When English Egyptologist Flinders Petrie first excavated the subsidiary graves in the 1920s, he hypothesized human sacrifice but found no physical evidence of trauma, leading later experts to speculate that retainers had died of natural causes or been buried alive. Campbell suggests Petrie likely overlooked the fractures or mistook perimortem trauma for post-depositional damage. While the presence of fractures provides physical evidence of violent death at the site, Campbell cautions that crania without trauma leave uncertainty as to whether every retainer was killed, noting that retainer sacrifice was a short-lived practice that tapered off and disappeared by the Second Dynasty.

Experts in the field, including Professor Salima Ikram of the American University in Cairo, noted that the research applies rigorous modern osteological methods to long-standing historical questions. The findings suggest that early Egyptian kingship was marked by gruesome funerary rites where retainers—who were later replaced by symbolic statuettes in subsequent dynasties—may have faced violent ritual execution to serve their rulers in the afterlife.

was marked by= 以……為特徵、具有……的特點
