As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms global industry, US President Donald Trump announced the creation of a new presidential task force designed to shape federal oversight and maintain American technological leadership. Dubbed the "Super Intelligence Force," the initiative will be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton and report directly to the president and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
The task force brings together key officials across defense, commerce, and administration, including Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor. According to a statement posted by Trump on Sunday, the body will coordinate federal engagement across a broad spectrum of stakeholders—ranging from consumers and public interest groups to religious organizations, critical infrastructure providers, and leading AI developers.
The announcement follows Trump's pledge last week to establish an AI safety board after tech executives signed a "morally binding" agreement on September 29. Executives from prominent firms, including OpenAI, Anthropic, SpaceX, and Google, signed the pact to help regulate the sector. While industry leaders and public figures have pushed for tighter regulation, Trump has generally resisted calls for heavy federal oversight, opting instead to allow tech companies to largely self-regulate.
The debate over federal policy comes amid ongoing discussion regarding the societal trade-offs of AI development. In an interview published on October 5, OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman argued that the technology should remain widely accessible, framing its risks as acceptable given its potential benefits. "The world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency," Altman stated. With the Super Intelligence Force now established, the administration aims to balance industry-led innovation with coordinated federal engagement.
