South Korean golfer Tom Kim won a gold medal at the Asian Games. His victory is important because it secures an exemption from mandatory service in South Korea's military.
The 24-year-old led going into the final round and played an impressive final day, shooting a six-under-par 64 to finish 18 under par. Despite a bogey on the 17th hole, Kim won the tournament by three strokes. He tapped in for par on the last hole before letting out a roar of relief.
In South Korea, most men are required to complete between 18 and 21 months of military service before turning 28 years old. However, the government gives exemptions to Asian Games champions and Olympic medal winners. Thanks to his gold medal, Kim will only need to complete basic military training, which lasts less than a month.
