A famous rock formation in Hawaii has fallen into the Pacific Ocean. The Hōlei Sea Arch was a 90-foot-tall structure made of lava rock, which is hard stone formed from volcano eruptions. The arch stood on the coast for about 550 years.
The natural arch became weak over many years. Earthquakes during a volcano eruption in 2018 damaged the nearby cliffs. Strong ocean waves also hit the rock structure and created deep cracks. A recent storm brought heavy waves that likely caused the arch to break apart.
Many people loved to visit and take photos of the tall rock arch. Years ago, park workers moved visitors to a safer area because the cliffs were unstable. Although this famous arch is gone, officials say new rock formations will slowly take its place in the future.
