Mac users will soon face stricter security prompts when granting software complete control over their files, as Apple prepares new limits on its "Full Disk Access" setting. The technology company announced it will require "very explicit user action" before allowing applications to gain sweeping system permissions, citing security concerns tied to the rapid rise of autonomous AI tools.
Full Disk Access is a powerful macOS permission originally designed to let backup software run smoothly by bypassing standard privacy safeguards. However, Apple warned that some developers are leveraging this broad access in ways that expose personal files, emails, messages, and browsing histories without clear user knowledge. As artificial intelligence agents become more independent and capable, Apple noted that the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially.
The policy shift follows recent controversy over Meta's Muse AI assistant after a tech journalist reported that the chatbot accessed his private messages without explicit permission. Meta disputed the claim, stating that reading message content is opt-in and requires users to manually enable both Full Disk Access and a dedicated messaging connector.
While Apple confirmed plans to introduce controls ensuring users only grant high-level access through deliberate action, the company has not yet announced an exact release date for the security update.
