Many young workers in the UK are choosing to opt out of their workplace pension schemes because of rising living costs. In the UK, workers over 22 years old who earn more than £10,000 a year are automatically enrolled in a workplace pension plan. Under these schemes, a portion of a worker's monthly pay is saved for retirement, and employers must also pay in a minimum contribution. However, high expenses for rent, food, and bills are forcing many younger employees to pause or stop these savings to survive today.

opt out of= 選擇不參與或退出某項制度或協議

Official data from the Department for Work and Pensions shows that 11.5% of eligible workers aged 22 to 29 opted out of their workplace pensions late last year, up from 6.6% in 2020. For workers in their 30s, the opt-out rate increased from 7.4% to 12.7%. For example, Hassan Nassar, a 26-year-old trainee doctor, stopped his pension payments of around £430 a month to help care for a sick family member, pay rent, and save for a home. He estimates he could lose between £5,000 and £10,000 in future retirement growth, but feels he has no choice.

up from= 與先前較低的數據相比有所上升

Financial experts and UK Pensions Minister Torsten Bell have warned that stopping pension contributions early could lead to lower private pension incomes for tomorrow's retirees. Money saved during one's 20s grows over decades through compound interest, where investment gains build on previous earnings. Financial advisers suggest that workers reduce their contribution amounts if their employer allows it, rather than stopping completely, so they do not lose employer contributions and long-term interest.
