For passengers who feel anxious about flying, traveling between Amsterdam Schiphol and Barcelona El Prat may prove particularly challenging. A new study by claims management firm AirAdvisor has identified the connection as Europe's most stressful air route for nervous flyers, scoring 75.1 out of 100 in a ranking evaluating flight predictability and passenger discomfort.
The analysis examined 26 popular European routes between September 2025 and August 2026, assessing flight duration, delays, cancellations, and weather conditions. Over that period, 7.02% of flights between Amsterdam and Barcelona were delayed by more than an hour, while 2.93% were cancelled. Frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions at the Dutch hub further contributed to passenger anxiety on the route.
AirAdvisor chief executive Anton Radchenko explained that fear of flying is often triggered by compound factors rather than a single event. Long waits at boarding gates, unexpected last-minute disruptions, and tricky weather conditions can significantly heighten stress levels. However, the study explicitly measures operational predictability rather than aircraft safety, aiming to help nervous travelers better anticipate potential delays before heading to the airport.
Other major European connections also scored high on the stress index. The route between London Heathrow and Amsterdam took second place with a score of 63.8, recording the highest cancellation rate among those surveyed at 3.69%. Meanwhile, flight paths such as Manchester–Dublin, Lisbon–Madeira, and Paris Charles de Gaulle–Nice also featured in the top five, highlighting how congestion and weather impact travel across the continent.
