In the historic Gulf port city of Veracruz, Mexico, the centuries-old tradition of son jarocho music and fandango community gatherings is experiencing a vibrant global resurgence. While young music lovers across Mexico embrace contemporary genres, many are also flocking to these traditional gatherings to play, dance, and celebrate a folk tradition that originated more than 300 years ago from a rich fusion of European, Caribbean, and Indigenous influences.

centuries-old= 形容詞,描述某事物具有數百年悠久的歷史。flocking to= 動詞短語,指成群結隊地湧向某個地方或活動。

At the heart of the fandango is an interactive jam session centered around the jarana, a small eight-string guitar carved from a single block of Spanish cedar. Musicians strum for extended periods while dancers step onto a wooden platform called a taríma to perform el zapateo—percussive tap dancing that keeps time for the musicians. Iconic regional songs like the original version of "La Bamba," which long predates the 1958 rock adaptation, can expand into trance-like community performances lasting anywhere from fifteen minutes to an hour.

centered around= 以特定對象、人物或主題為核心。lasting anywhere from X to Y= 用於表示持續時間在最小值與最大值之間的彈性範圍。

The tradition was not always so widely celebrated. According to Gilberto Gutierrez, a leading figure in son jarocho and founding member of the band Mono Blanco, the music fell out of favor during the 1960s and 1970s, when it was often dismissed as low-brow and restricted to small family events. In response, Gutierrez helped lead a cultural renewal and established the caSon Cultural Center in Veracruz, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year by holding monthly community fandangos and crowded music classes.

fell out of favor= 失寵、不再受歡迎或失去社會認同與支持。

Today, fandangos bring people together for birthdays, baptisms, and public celebrations, offering a shared sense of community and belonging. Beyond its roots in Veracruz, son jarocho has gained a passionate international following, with active musical communities now performing in cities across the United States, Europe, South America, and Asia.

Beyond its roots in= 表示超越原產地或發源地的影響範圍。
