On a hot afternoon in July, renewable power sources briefly supplied more than half of India's peak electricity demand for only the second time in the country's history. Over the past decade, India has expanded its non-fossil fuel capacity from just 4 gigawatts to 300 gigawatts—accounting for 54% of its total 552-gigawatt capacity and reaching its national target five years ahead of schedule. Sumant Sinha, CEO of Nasdaq-listed clean energy firm ReNew Power, noted that renewable energy is no longer a marginal source sitting at the edge of the power system.

sitting at the edge of= 處於次要或邊緣地位,而非核心組成部分

Despite this milestone, India's rapid green energy expansion is facing serious operational hurdles. Because power plant construction has progressed much faster than power line infrastructure, large amounts of generated clean energy are being wasted through grid curtailment. According to the global energy think-tank Ember, transmission constraints accounted for nearly two-thirds of all renewable energy curtailment in the first quarter of 2026, wasting 300 gigawatt-hours of electricity. Construction of new power lines often stalls for years due to right-of-way disputes, land acquisition, and complex multi-agency approvals.

accounted for= 在總數中占據或構成特定的比例

The problem is compounded by the heavy concentration of solar and wind installations in north-western states like Gujarat and Rajasthan. Vibhuti Garg from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis highlighted that India added a record 51 gigawatts of renewable capacity last year, far exceeding the historical pace of 10 to 15 gigawatts per year that the existing grid was built to handle. While battery storage systems at pooling stations could store excess daytime energy for evening use, rising battery prices, raw material shortages linked to Middle East conflicts, and currency depreciation have delayed critical storage projects.

far exceeding= 大幅超越以往的基準、速度或記錄

Financial bottlenecks present another major hurdle as India targets 500 gigawatts of non-fossil electricity capacity by 2030—an ambitious transition estimated to require between $400 billion and $500 billion. Although the Paris Agreement pledged $100 billion annually in climate finance from developed nations to developing countries, roughly 83% of India's climate mitigation funding remains domestically sourced. Experts stress that expanding access to lower-interest loans and financial guarantees to private investors will be essential for building the grid and storage infrastructure needed to meet India's clean energy goals.
