Nearly a year after nationwide youth-led demonstrations shook Morocco, young activists are seeking to turn street protest demands into political action as the country prepares for parliamentary elections on September 23. Candidates from a new generation are campaigning for seats in the 395-member House of Representatives, hoping to channel widespread frustration over public services into formal reform.

seeking to turn= 試圖將某一狀態或訴求轉化為另一種行動

The protest movement, known as GenZ 212, erupted in late September 2025 following public outrage over the deaths of eight women after C-section operations at a public hospital in Agadir. Mobilized primarily through social media platforms like Discord, TikTok, and Instagram, young Moroccans demonstrated across the nation to demand improved healthcare and education, better job opportunities, and an end to corruption. At least three people were killed during unrest in October 2025.

Despite the surge in youth activism, political parties face a major challenge in turning street support into ballot box participation. According to official electoral rolls, voters aged 18 to 24 make up only about four percent of the 15.8 million registered voters, while citizens aged 60 and above account for more than 29 percent. Economic pressures remain a central concern, with official data showing youth unemployment reached 37.2 percent in 2025 compared to an overall national rate of 13 percent.

Young candidates like 28-year-old Hamza El Kharroubi, who founded the Environment and Sustainability Party, express cautious optimism that more young people will vote and run for office. Others, such as 32-year-old campaigner Az-el Arab Hilmi, emphasize that politicians must deliver tangible daily improvements rather than general promises. While Morocco’s political system reserves central institutional authority for the monarchy, elected officials manage public policy, making transparent governance and sustained civic engagement crucial for lasting reform.
