A long-running French language school in Tehran has been shut down by Iranian authorities, prompting a swift response from Paris. France announced on Sunday that it will summon Iran's ambassador to Paris and prepare further measures after the closure of the French Language Centre.
Iranian officials accused the school of carrying out illegal actions that violated diplomatic rules. According to Mizan, the news site of the Iranian judiciary, prosecutors claimed the centre used its language training activities to build networks among Iranian elite figures and facilitate their departure from the country.
French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux condemned the closure as unjustifiable and unacceptable, calling it a new attack against France's cultural presence in Iran. He noted that the decision follows a previous incident in July, when two staff members of the French embassy were assaulted.
Relations between Paris and Tehran have become increasingly strained over recent months. In August, Iran's Intelligence Ministry reported that it had detained two French diplomats over allegations of foreign interference before turning them over to the French ambassador.
