A 47-year-old mother in India ran a race without shoes to win money for her children. Ramabai Ranveer had no training and no running shoes. She entered a three-kilometer community race in August and won first place.
Ranveer wanted to win the prize money of 3,000 rupees (about 31 US dollars). Her husband died in 2012, and she works hard to support her family. She stopped going to school when she was 13 years old. She wants her two daughters to have a better education and a better life.
The prize money helped her buy books and study materials for her daughters. One daughter is studying for police recruitment tests. The other daughter is studying for civil service tests to get a good government job.
Videos of Ranveer running barefoot spread quickly on the internet. Many people were moved by her story. Local officials later decided to give her family 50,000 rupees in financial help. Her story showed how hard some parents work so their children can go to school.
