Istanbul Airport in Türkiye has claimed the title of the world’s most connected airport for 2026, surpassing London Heathrow in the latest global rankings. According to aviation analytics firm OAG’s Megahubs Index, the Turkish hub now leads global air transit, connecting passengers to hundreds of destinations worldwide.
The rankings are evaluated based on the number of possible connections between inbound and outbound flights within a six-hour window on the year’s busiest travel day, Sunday, August 2. Istanbul Airport, which ranks as the eighth busiest airport globally in terms of seat capacity, offers potential flight connections to 337 international destinations.
London Heathrow fell to second place as its potential flight connections dropped by 6% compared to the busiest day last year. OAG noted that Heathrow’s rankings were affected by ongoing schedule disruptions in the Middle East, which led to a 25% reduction in seat capacity to the region this August.
European megahubs performed strongly overall, securing five of the top ten positions worldwide. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol placed third, with Frankfurt International Airport ranking seventh and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport ninth. Other global hubs in the top ten included Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Chicago O'Hare, Seoul Incheon, Tokyo Haneda, and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson.
