Glaciers across the Himalayas are losing mass 65 percent faster than they were a decade ago, threatening water supplies, agriculture, and energy systems for hundreds of millions of people across South Asia. According to a new report by environmental consultancy Systemiq alongside regional research partners, the high-mountain landscape is rapidly destabilizing following recent floods in Nepal and Tibet that killed more than 1,300 people.

65 percent faster than they were a decade ago= 比較當前與十年前的流失速度,「65 percent faster than they were」表示比十年前快了 65%。

Despite these heightened risks, researchers warn of a critical monitoring gap across the region. Only about 21 of an estimated 40,000 glaciers in the Himalaya-Karakoram range are currently monitored in detail on a sustained basis. As glaciers retreat, they frequently form expanding lakes retained only by loose rock and ice. Combined with thawing permafrost and unstable mountain slopes, these formations increase the risk of cascading disasters, including sudden glacial lake outburst floods.

retained only by= 表示「僅靠……

The environmental shift also poses severe long-term risks to regional economies. The report estimates that water originating in the Himalayas supports roughly 20 percent of India's gross domestic product, sustaining major crops such as wheat, rice, and tea, as well as hydropower plants and tourism. However, scientists project that glacier runoff will reach "peak water" around mid-century across most regional river basins before permanently declining.

The report highlights specific actions that South Asian countries can take locally to slow the damage. Analysts estimate that roughly one-third of Himalayan glacier melt is driven by black carbon—dark soot produced by sources such as brick kilns in the surrounding plains. When soot settles on mountain snow, it absorbs solar radiation and speeds up melting. Because black carbon is a localized pollutant, reducing soot emissions offers an immediate opportunity for regional governments to mitigate glacier loss while expanding early-warning monitoring systems.

driven by= 表示「由……

  1. Because black carbon is a localized pollutant, reducing soot emissions offers an immediate opportunity for regional governments to   glacier loss while expanding early-warning monitoring systems.

  2. Why does reducing black carbon emissions offer an immediate opportunity to protect Himalayan glaciers?
