Major technology executives and political leaders are locked in a debate over whether to slow down artificial intelligence development. The discussion began after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an open letter calling on the industry to "pace the frontier" and moderate the speed of AI progress. His proposal quickly gained backing from other prominent tech figures, including OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk, while Alphabet's Demis Hassabis offered tentative support.
However, U.S. political figures have rejected calls for a pause, warning that slowing down could jeopardize American technological leadership. Donald Trump dismissed the executives' concerns as an overreaction, telling the Financial Times that the U.S. currently leads China in AI and must maintain that position because "whoever wins AI, wins."
House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed similar concerns during an interview on CNN, warning that hastily imposing restrictions could create a national security threat. Johnson cautioned against emergency legislative action, arguing that if Congress races to regulate the technology, the U.S. risks losing the global AI race to China.
