Sagal Abdi-Wali has made history in the United Kingdom. She is the first Somali-born refugee woman elected to the UK Parliament. A refugee is a person who leaves their home country to find safety.
Abdi-Wali arrived in Britain from Somalia when she was a child. Years later, she entered British politics with the Labour Party. This week, she took her official oath to become a lawmaker, or Member of Parliament (MP).
She won the election for the Holborn and St Pancras area in London. The seat became open when former Prime Minister Keir Starmer left it. Abdi-Wali won the race after defeating Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party.
