Bright green and purple lights filled the night sky across the United Kingdom on Friday and Saturday. Many people went outside to watch the colourful display, known as the northern lights or aurora borealis. Usually, people only see these lights in the far north, near Scotland or the Arctic. This weekend, people saw them unusually far south in southern England.

known as= 〜として知られている(別名や通称を紹介する表現)

The northern lights happen because of the sun. The sun sends tiny charged particles into space. When these particles reach Earth, they hit gases in the air around the poles. This collision releases energy as light. Oxygen creates green light, while nitrogen makes blue and purple colours.

because of= 〜が原因で、〜のために(理由を表す前置詞)while= その一方で(2つの事実を対比させる接続詞)

Weather forecasters said people might still see the lights until Tuesday if the sky stays clear. Experts also said 2026 is a peak year for watching the lights because the sun is very active right now.

might still= まだ〜するかもしれない(将来の可能性を表す表現)
