Money is one of the most difficult topics to discuss when dating. Asking about salary too early can make a person seem focused only on money, but waiting too long can lead to financial problems later. Young adults in New York recently shared different opinions about when couples should reveal their incomes.
Many young people believe that salary details should remain private until a relationship becomes official. Alexa Ludato, a 25-year-old insurance worker, said she wants to know what a date does for work, but not how much they earn, until they are officially together. Similarly, 26-year-old Bridget Shurdut considers asking about salary on early dates a "red flag," explaining that she cares more about ambition than income.
Some couples prefer to avoid exact figures even in long relationships, adjusting their spending based on lifestyle instead. However, relationship coach Kate Mansfield believes people should talk about money earlier. She suggests discussing spending habits, savings, and lifestyle on the first few dates to see if two people are financially compatible.
