Margaret Hamilton, the computer pioneer whose flight software enabled astronauts to land safely on the moon during the historic 1969 Apollo 11 mission, has died at the age of 90. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) announced that Hamilton passed away on September 30.

Hamilton's software proved critical during the final minutes of the lunar landing, when an unexpected onboard computer alarm threatened to abort the mission. Her code was designed with built-in error detection and recovery mechanisms, allowing the system to compensate for hardware issues by automatically restarting and prioritizing essential landing tasks. In 2016, former US President Barack Obama awarded Hamilton the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her role, noting that the astronauts were fortunate to rely on her work.

Before terms like "software engineer" became mainstream, Hamilton learned programming at MIT under a meteorologist and later developed software to detect enemy aircraft. When MIT secured a NASA contract for the Apollo onboard flight software, she was the first programmer and the first woman to join the team, drawn by the challenge of doing something that had never been done before.

mainstream= 「主流の」「一般に定着した」。

According to MIT, Hamilton is survived by her daughter, a son-in-law, two grandsons, and four great-grandchildren. Reflecting on her team's pioneering efforts in a 2009 interview, Hamilton remarked that they were among the luckiest people in the world because there was no choice but to be pioneers and no time to be beginners.
