Physicist Francis Halzen has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his ground-breaking work in detecting cosmic particles known as neutrinos. These elusive subatomic particles—often called "ghost particles"—carry vital information from the distant universe, helping scientists study violent, high-energy events like exploding stars and giant black holes that traditional optical telescopes cannot see.

ground-breaking= 従来の概念を覆すような革新的・画期的な進展を表す表現。

Halzen, an 82-year-old Belgian-born professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, led the development of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole in Antarctica. Proposed in the 1980s, the ambitious project embedded thousands of sensitive light sensors deep within a cubic kilometer of clear Antarctic ice. Because neutrinos have no electric charge and extremely tiny mass, trillions zip harmlessly through matter every second. However, on rare occasions when a neutrino collides with an atomic nucleus in the ice, it produces fast-moving charged particles that emit a blue glow, allowing researchers to calculate the particle's direction and cosmic origin.

"I have to emphasize how lucky I was," Halzen said following the announcement, noting that very few scientists originally believed the bold concept would actually work. Mark Pearce, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, praised Halzen's tenacity and scientific vision, stating that his work has paved the way for a new kind of astronomy. Experts explain that because magnetic fields do not bend neutrinos and dense material does not easily block them, detecting these particles provides an invaluable window into the most extreme environments in space.

paved the way= 将来の発展や新しい分野への道を開くことを意味する成句。

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the prize, which includes 12 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million). Halzen shared that receiving the award came as a great surprise. His pioneering leadership of the IceCube project has transformed modern astrophysics by allowing humanity to observe the universe through entirely new eyes.
