American floor-cleaning startup Matic has received a regulatory waiver from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for its flagship robot vacuum and mop. On October 2, the agency added Matic’s model 4MA0001 and its charging dock to a list of products exempt from foreign technology bans, marking an unusual regulatory step for a domestic hardware manufacturer.

Although Matic already uses pre-approved off-the-shelf Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips from Intel and assembles its devices in Mountain View, California, the waiver offers protection against tightening import restrictions. The FCC is currently working to close regulatory loopholes and may soon require device manufacturers to disclose all foreign components. Because Matic does not yet source 65 percent of its parts domestically—the official threshold required to claim "Made in the US"—foreign components could potentially create legal hurdles as federal rules evolve.

Matic's co-founder and chief executive, Mehul Nariyawala, explained that the company relies on US suppliers for critical parts, including Nvidia for its main computing platform, whenever possible. Rapid growth has driven Matic from shipping 1,500 units annually a year ago to 17,000 today. To keep up with demand and expand domestic operations, the company recently converted its 24,000-square-foot Mountain View facility entirely into a production center while moving its corporate offices to nearby Menlo Park.

driven ... from X to Y= 〜をXからYへと増加・変化させた。 keep up with demand= 需要に応える、需要に追いつく。

For Matic, domestic assembly remains a core selling point in a market dominated by foreign competitors. While the immediate practical impact of the FCC waiver may be limited, it provides the growing startup with regulatory insurance as the US government increases scrutiny over foreign-made electronics and hardware components.
