People in Ghana often hear pastors preaching on moving public buses. Now, Ghana has started enforcing a new law that stops people from preaching and selling items on public transport while vehicles are moving. People who break the law face up to eight months in prison, a fine of up to $52, or both.
Lawmakers created the rule to improve passenger safety and comfort. Some passengers and officials say that loud preaching can distract bus drivers and disturb travellers who want a quiet journey.
Many preachers are worried about the new rules. Pastor Boateng Bismark James has preached on buses leaving Accra since 2023. He says many travellers need his message of hope. He also relies on small money gifts from passengers to support his family and pay for his children's education.
Passengers have different views about the new law. Some passengers say preaching gives them comfort during stressful times. Others prefer to travel in peace without noise. Some church leaders advise pastors to follow the law and share their religious messages on social media instead.
