Several counties in Florida have declared a local state of emergency to combat a rising number of dengue fever infections. Officials in Hillsborough County, home to Tampa, announced the measure on September 24 after recording 134 confirmed cases of the mosquito-borne illness. Health authorities warned that the outbreak poses an immediate threat to public safety, requiring urgent actions such as pesticide spraying, public education, and emergency resource management.

Dengue fever is caused by a virus transmitted through the bites of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, both of which are present across Florida. Dengue fever is often referred to as "breakbone fever" due to the extreme joint and muscle pain it can cause; symptoms also include sudden high fever, severe headaches, eye pain, vomiting, and bleeding. Symptoms usually appear three to fourteen days after an infected bite and last up to a week. While most cases resolve with rest, a severe form known as dengue hemorrhagic fever can be fatal without proper supportive care.

Neighboring Pasco and Pinellas counties have issued similar emergency declarations. According to the Florida Department of Health, the state has recorded 190 locally acquired dengue cases and 212 travel-related cases so far in 2026. Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) list a slightly higher count of 392 total cases statewide this year. Declaring a local state of emergency allows counties to request emergency state and federal funding and mutual aid to control mosquito populations.

Locally acquired dengue has historically been rare in the continental United States, but scientists warn that global warming is encouraging tropical mosquitoes to expand into new regions. California reported its first local cases in 2023, and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were recently detected in homes in London. Despite the recent surge, Hillsborough authorities expressed optimism that local infections may soon slow down, noting that recent mosquito test pools in the county showed no positive virus results.
