A new three-year project aims to save one of the rarest bumblebees in the United Kingdom. The Moss carder bee is a special insect with soft, ginger-yellow hairs across its body and no black hairs.
These bees are in danger because they are losing their natural habitats. Most bumblebees can fly far to look for food. However, Moss carder bees look for food very close to their nests. When their living areas break apart, it is very hard for them to survive.
During the project, wildlife workers will work with local land owners. They will try small changes to the land to protect wild grass and flower areas. The workers want to find out which changes help the bees the most.
The team also wants to learn more about how the bees live and behave. They hope these efforts will help the rare bee population grow again.
