Police in New York City arrested two men after they came out of a manhole. A manhole is an opening in the street with a heavy metal cover. It leads to underground sewer pipes. Officers saw three men leave the sewer early on Wednesday morning, but one man ran away.
Police arrested 26-year-old Kevin Rodriguez and 25-year-old Samuel Reveron on Thursday. Officials suspect the men went underground to look for gold, money, and metal. Rainstorms often wash valuable lost items into city drains. One of the men allegedly told police that they search the sewers for anything of value.
A court charged the two men with trespassing and conspiracy. They pleaded not guilty, and a judge released them from custody. Other people have also been seen coming out of manholes in New York in recent months.
City officials warned that going into the sewer system is illegal and very dangerous. People inside the pipes can get trapped, get sick from dangerous gases, or drown in sudden floods.
