A rare type of snail laid eggs inside a car while traveling to a new home. Workers were moving 24 glutinous snails to a wildlife park in Kent. Glutinous snails are small water snails. They are no bigger than a human fingertip.
These snails used to live across the UK. Over time, environmental changes damaged their natural homes. Today, they live in only one lake in Wales. Because of this, wildlife workers are working to save the species.
In July, a worker drove the snails on a six-hour journey from Wales to Kent. During the drive, the snails started laying eggs. The worker found about 12 egg pods in the travel containers by the end of the trip.
The wildlife park placed the snails into special ponds to breed. The snails have already produced hundreds of babies in just two months. Workers hope to release the new snails back into the wild in the future.
