Scientists in the UK are turning to advanced biotechnology to help wild plants and animals survive the rapid pace of climate change and emerging diseases. Under a £54 million "accelerated adaptation" initiative created by the UK's Advanced Research and Invention Agency (Aria), 14 research teams will share an initial £30 million over the next two years. The goal is to provide environmentalists with "precision tools" that speed up natural evolutionary processes, helping vulnerable species adapt before they face extinction.

turning to= 問題解決のために〜に頼る、〜を活用し始める

The funded projects target iconic British species and widespread ecological threats. Researchers at Cardiff University are developing an RNA injection for ash trees affected by ash dieback—a fungal disease expected to kill half of Britain's ash trees—acting as a form of tree vaccination. Another team at the University of Exeter plans to use Crispr gene editing to make endangered swallowtail butterflies more resistant to farm insecticides. Meanwhile, scientists collaborating with Imperial College London aim to protect amphibians from a deadly skin fungus by engineering protective bacteria that live on their skin.

acting as= 〜の役割を果たしている、〜として機能している

Because altering wild species carries environmental risks, all experimental work will remain strictly inside secure laboratories. According to Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger, chair of the programme's ethical advisory committee, none of the experimental solutions will be released into the wild during the project's run, which extends to 2030. The ethical framework relies on guidelines adopted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), following debates among global conservation groups regarding potential unintended consequences of synthetic biology.

extends to= (期間や期限が)〜にまで及ぶ、〜まで続く

Independent experts suggest the new technologies could provide valuable options for ecosystems facing severe drought and pathogens, though their overall impact may remain modest. Yannick Wurm, director of the programme at Aria, emphasized that these high-tech interventions are designed to complement, rather than replace, traditional conservation measures such as nature reserves.
