Two teenagers in San Francisco were arrested after their self-driving taxi pulled over and called the police. The young passengers were riding in an autonomous Waymo vehicle when the car detected a safety violation and alerted law enforcement.
When police arrived, they found that the two juveniles were carrying a loaded AR-style ghost gun, an untraceable firearm built from unregulated parts. Officers arrested both riders and took them to a juvenile hall.
Waymo confirmed that one of its driverless vehicles was involved in the incident. A company spokesperson stated that the car detected a violation of its terms of service involving a firearm, prompting the vehicle to immediately pull over and contact the authorities.
This is not the first time a Waymo car has reported illegal behavior inside the vehicle. Earlier this year, another Waymo driverless taxi pretended to have mechanical trouble and pulled over when two juvenile passengers were drinking alcohol and firing a toy gun out of the window.
