During emergency situations, having enough water and healthy food is essential. Health expert McManamon says that people should drink between 1,500 and 2,500 millilitres of fluid every day in any weather. If fresh water is limited, fluid-rich tinned foods can also help keep people hydrated.
Many people wonder if canned food is as healthy as fresh food. Dr Gill explains that canned food can be part of a healthy diet. It provides similar amounts of main nutrients, including carbohydrates, protein, fats, and fibre. It also contains important minerals and fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin A and vitamin E.
However, the heating process used in canning can reduce some vitamins. As a result, canned foods usually have lower levels of vitamin B and vitamin C than fresh foods. Even so, Dr Gill reassures that tinned items remain a useful source of vitamins when emergency supplies are needed.
